Working in the robotics and vision department is quiet cool. We already worked on many projects together. One day, at a kick off meeting for one of our clients, we were asked for 3D visualizing data. As typically, we answered with classics like “that might be difficult because…”, “that’s not possible because…”, “that will take a some time because…” etc. !
We saw that there seemed to be a lot of reasons not having the appropriate digital models at the moment for our clients.
The need to support our existing clients was reason for developing a system on our own that could digitize 3D industrial parts quickly , so that our robots could identify them in camera data for example. Up to this point in time capturing a complete object in 3D was a tedious, time consuming and expensive task. And we wanted to change that.
We formed our core team to work out the specification of the new system and quickly arrived at the following core features for our new system: it should allow us to scan in real-time, should be extremely simple to use, and affordable so that every engineer could have his/her own scanner.
After half a year of intense work we finally came up with a prototype which presented at an internal event: It was a prototype showing the final digital model only – no real-time visualization at all and no user interface. Everyone being scanned was wondering what’s going on but in the end, when people were looking at resulting 3D model (mostly scans of their own), they could not believe what happened… The feedback was overwhelming, everyone including us was stunned by the results this hacky prototype was able to produce. It was that one moment we started to realize of what we had built and especially after talking to early adopters within ‘our ReconstructMe community’, we kept being surprised by all the people using our software for completely different use cases all around the world.
In January 2012, we launched ReconstructMe.net and asked for beta-users. After just a couple of days the number of applications exceeded our internal resources and we had to decline new applications. In March 2012, we officially released the first version of ReconstructMe and it was quickly picked up around the world.
Today, ReconstructMe is used by makers, in arts, in health-care systems and industrial applications. We are proud that our system helps people all around the world to get customized, best-fit product more quickly and at a favorable price.
